Prof Peter Mills - BSPP President
Peter is a graduate of the University of London, obtaining a BSc in Botany from Bedford College in 1977 and a PhD in Plant Pathology from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. From there he moved to the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland and later became a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science, The Queen's University of Belfast. He moved to Horticulture Research International in 1993 to become Head of, firstly, the Department of Microbial Biotechnology and then of Microbiology and Plant Pathology in 1996. He is now Research Director for Environmental Microbiology. His research interests currently cover interactions between strains of Verticillium and Agaricus bisporus, and characterisation of a complex of dsRNAs known as ‘Mushroom Virus X’.
As a Board member for BSPP between 1997-2001, Peter was Chairman of the Electronic Communication Committee that was responsible for creation of the BSPP Journal Molecular Plant Pathology and for resurrection of New Disease Reports.
